Depression Makes Connection Difficult
Although many think of depression as feeling sad or down, depression can present in several different ways. Some of these ways include irritability, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, hopelessness, self-criticism, or an intense desire to withdraw.
For some people, the more noticeable change is a loss of interest, energy, or motivation. Things that once felt meaningful or enjoyable may begin to feel flat. Relationships require more effort and become difficult to turn towards, straining what matters to us most. Ordinary responsibilities, like household chores or job functions, can feel difficult to begin or complete.
A person may continue working, caring for family, and keeping up with daily life while privately struggling to truly connect with the experiences around them. This disconnection leads to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and lack of motivation.
When life begins to feel increasingly narrow, heavy, or difficult to participate in, it is worth taking seriously and considering seeing a clinician who can help walk with you.
Wellspring Counseling & Coaching provides depression counseling in Steubenville, Ohio, for individuals throughout the Ohio Valley. Our clinicians are trained in empirically supported treatments tailored to each client, enabling us to provide the highest-quality care available in the Ohio Valley.
Our clinicians care deeply about each client and provide a safe space for a relationship in which the client can begin healing.
We Will Help
Depression often affects the very capacities a person needs to make a change.
Low energy can make scheduling an appointment feel like another task to manage. Feeling hopelessness can make treatment seem unlikely to help. Difficulty concentrating can make researching and booking a therapist feel overwhelming, and withdrawal often makes it harder to reach out to other people at all.
Practical barriers also make it difficult to access care. Cost, scheduling, transportation, uncertainty about insurance, or simply not knowing where to begin can delay care—even when they recognize that they are struggling. Low energy and motivation, canceling plans, and postponing tasks can reinforce this cycle.
Over time, a person can have fewer positive experiences of relationship, accomplishment, and purpose.
Treatment for depression varies based on the individual’s needs. Grief, chronic stress, painful experiences, difficult relationships, perfectionism, shame, or a harsh way of relating to oneself can also pose barriers to seeking help.
Good treatment begins by understanding both what a person is experiencing and what may be making it difficult to move forward. Wellspring clinicians are trained to provide high-quality treatment to individuals so they can reclaim positive experiences in life. They will meet you exactly where and as you are, and offer help to end the cycle of depression.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
There is no particular level of severity a person has to reach before therapy is appropriate. Changes in mood, motivation, sleep, concentration, relationships, or interest in things that once mattered are all reasons to seek help—particularly when those changes persist or begin interfering with everyday life.
Therapy can also be helpful for someone who simply recognizes that they have not felt like themselves for a while and wants to better understand why and begin feeling better.
-
Depression treatment begins with understanding the individual client’s needs. Our therapist will want to understand what the person has been experiencing, how depression is affecting daily life, and what factors may be contributing to or maintaining it.
From there, treatment may involve changing patterns of thought or behavior, gradually reconnecting with meaningful activities and relationships, working through difficult emotional or relational experiences, or developing a different way of responding to painful thoughts and feelings.
-
Our clinicians draw from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) depending on the needs of the client.
Treatment is individualized, and a therapist may draw from more than one approach over the course of therapy.
-
No. A person does not need to know whether their experience meets the criteria for a depressive disorder before beginning therapy.
Part of the initial work is understanding what has changed, how it is affecting life, and whether depression—or something else—may help explain what is happening.
Depression can make connections harder when you need them most.
When a person is depressed, they may start pulling away. When their friends ask how they are, they smile and say, “Good!” because explaining the real answer feels impossibly burdensome to others. They may begin to sleep more or stop going out with friends and family. The calendar feels entirely too full of activities, yet entirely empty of anything meaningful. They may be unable to accomplish tasks they set for themselves, and then become further discouraged as their thoughts echo their own perceived uselessness.
Depression can create a difficult cycle: the less energy they have, the more they withdraw—and the more disconnected they become from the people and parts of life that bring meaning.
At Wellspring, we believe that people are wounded within relationships and heal within relationships.
Our clinicians care deeply and want to understand what's happening in our clients’ lives, not simply identify their symptoms.
What has changed in your story? What have you lost? What have you gained? Where have you become disconnected? What happens when you're struggling, and you allow other safe people to get close enough to see it?
We don’t want our clients to perform in therapy or convince us that they are doing better than they are.
We start with what's actually happening for them, within their context and their life.

Learn how to turn towards life again.
Sadness is human. So are grief, disappointment, loneliness, anger, and exhaustion. A meaningful life will contain all of them. The question is whether those experiences leave you unable to participate in your own life—or whether you can carry them while remaining connected to yourself, to other people, and to your values and beliefs.
Progress can look surprisingly ordinary for clients. Beginning to answer a friend’s call instead of letting it go to voicemail, realizing the inner critic is a little quieter, showing up for themself and others, laughing again, planning trips and feeling excited about them.
Those moments matter more than we give them credit for.
Healing brings your life, your time, your story back.
